Rock-Ola Change Mech from a 160 to 100 Player

by markymarkuk » Tue Oct 29, 2013 6:24 pm

Hi
Sorry the title not really clear...

But I have a 441 Rock-Ola that currently has the capability of playing 100 tunes. However, it's missing parts and faulty. I managed to pick up a Rock-Ola (model unknown, but made in 1970 ish). Everything mechanically looks identical except it can play 160 selections.
I'm wondering, is it possible to swap the mech, from what I can see, obviously the record magazine is larger, the selector assembly is larger, and the read/write carriage arms are bigger, but everything else seems identical in size. What do you think about me changing this over and bolt on the "100" 441 parts. Im sure I can sort the wires out.
Any advise or youor thoughts? thanks

Hi
I would say that you might not have space for the larger record basket, and possibly the wobble plate would be too large to fit into the existing brackets, whats parts are missing and defective on the existing machine, might be better in the long run to just buy the parts for a 100 selection machine and keep the other parts as spares for future machines or sell them

It would be my guess that the smaller 100 selection cabinet, won't accommodate the larger mechanism.
But, MOST of the internal parts can be interchanged to some extent--Ron Rich

I've both a 443 100 and a 468 160 Rock-Ola. But they're in our summerhouse, so I'm not going down to the bottom of the garden tonight as it's raining, or I'd check it out.
But from memory, the carousels look the same size, just that the dividers on the 160 are closer together. I'm pretty sure they share the same sized chassis, but I may be wrong. A lot of Rock-Ola models between those dates had similar mechanisms. I'd think as they did both 100s and 160s with similar cabinets, it would seem likely they all shared a common chassis, which would have made manufacturing simpler. I've looked up the dimensions of both models and the 100 is actually a couple of inches deeper than the 160.

thanks for the comments guys. I have looked over both this evening. The sub frame that holds everything is deeper for the 160 than the 100. But I should be able to salvage some parts. I only needed the turntable, the wobble plate solenoid, the write arm solenoid, and tone arm, and gears from the gripper arm and the magazine motor. Gonna strip it this weekend and rebuild the original 441 mech using these parts. Will probably report back here when I come to attach all the wires!!!!

Cheers

I've measure both mine, there are some differences

100 mech.
The chassis suspension bolt to bolt, is 23"L by 13.5" D
The carousel is about 16".

160 mech.

26"L X 15.5" D

Carousel about 18"

thanks for the measurements. I guess I will have to use the bits from the 160 and fit to my currently non-working 100 mech. Shame as the 160 mech works (by the way, its in one of those "hidden" type boxes).

Still waiting for my manuals from Victory. Got the 441 mech stripped to the bare bones, every shaft, gear, nut and bolt is now laying on the garage floor... just hope I can put it back together!!!!! will keep you posted!

Good luck!

What you have is commonly called a "hideaway," for use with one or more wall boxes.

As well as our two jukeboxes in the summerhouse, a mix of old and modern technology gives me more options (and more space in our front room!)
