100B credit/cancel wiring

by Ozzie » Mon Feb 13, 2012 6:42 am

I posted a while back about my jukebox which I have had for over 20 years and only after posting here did I learn was a "frankenstein" unit, a 100B cabinet with a 100C mechanism. After learning that the two models were interchangeable and considering that I have owned it for so long in this state I have decided to restore it in this configuration. I do have the manuals so I should now be able to use the correct terminology.
It had been set up for free play and I am now trying to restore it to play 1 song for a dime/3 for a quarter. In attempting to clean and adjust the X/Y/Z contacts a wire broke loose. As is, there is still one wire going to each side of the three contacts and I am trying to figure out where the broken wire went. I traced the other end of the broken wire to a terminal on the female 8 pin connector going to the selector. It connects to a terminal that also has one end of a capacitor soldered to it.
Any help on this would be appreciated.

Ozzie

Ozzie,
The pins on that socket are numbered--which number is it going to?--BTW--do not use color of wire in that unit as any type of guide, as it varied from production run to run-- all else failing--( like looking at the schematic ?). Post a photo here, and maybe someone can figure it out. Ron Rich

Ron,

I had looked at the schematic but was unable to decipher it. On the copy I have it is impossible to tell if the terminals are numbered. On my box the wire comes from the #7 terminal. It seems to me that only one of the 6 terminals of the XYZ contacts has 2 wires going to it and I thought someone might know. The schematic does not show 2 wires going directly to any of the XYZ contacts but there are connections down the line on several of them. I don't know if a photo would really be any help as it would only show a loose wire.

Ozzie,
My schematic shows 25 vac on pin 7, and also on the bottom contact of the "X" contacts---the .05 cap is between pin 7 and pin 2 on the same socket. HTH,

Ron,
Thank you for the suggestion. I think I have the wiring straight on the xyz contacts. This is what happens now: The coin switches work and the credit light comes on and the selector seems to be working right. When a letter & number are pressed things seem to work but cancel solenoid remains energized and buzzes. The troubleshooting chart gives several causes and I think the most likely is a bad timing relay. My question is how would I confirm this?

Thanks, Ozzie

Ozzie,
Remove one of the cap leads --carefully, as the TR's tend to be weak at those junctions--remove one of the leads and measure the coil at that point--should be about 400 ohms,if i remember right. I hope you have replaced that, and all other caps--- Ron Rich

Thanks Ron,

The coil has no resistance with the capacitor disconnected so that is a problem. Any suggestions where I can get one? All of the caps have been replaced on the amp but none on the receiver. I will do that so are you referring to every one on the receiver?

Thank you for your help and patience on this project of mine, Ozzie

Ron,

I have made progress. Credit/cancel wiring is sorted out and I received your book. I now have a new problem with the popularity meter wiring. I unsoldered the four wires to the popularity meter/indicator lights to remove the tube they go through to get that rechromed. i marked the wires to insure they went back correctly but after reassembling everything when I make a selection the popularity meter solenoid and a cancel solenoid remain constantly energized. Obviously I have something wrong. I have checked the manual but can't find a schematic that is much help. Is there a way to trace the wires and start from scratch? I am stuck right now.

Thanks

Actually, I see it now on the schematic in your book but unfortunately no color code for the wires. I have a shop manual for my '63 Cadillac which spoiled me with its great schematics - color indicated for every wire.
Still if any help on correctly rewiring this would be appreciated.

Ozzie,
No--you just have to sort it out--most of them I have seen lately, are so faded that wire colors are not distinguishable--
Hint--the next time you do something like that--use colored heat shrink to mark your wires ( and of course, mark you drawing with the colors).

Ron,

I'm trying to sort it out. Do you know which contacts operate the popularity meter solenoid? I believe it is constantly energized now and can't find much mention of it in the manual.

Ozzie,
Do you have a service manual--it's clearly pointed out on the switch adjustment page, as the "C" / "SC" contacts, along with the adjustment procedure.

Ron,

I am making much progress and learning a lot along the way. One question I have that I don't see an answer too in the manual or your book: Do the pin cancel and popularity meter solenoids operate at the same time?

Thanks, Ozzie
