Seeburg mech stutter

I'm working on my recently acquired STD-3 phono and I'm currently in the process of getting the mech all lubed up. I'm not sure how long the box had been sitting idle, but when I powered the mech(removed from the cabinet), it wouldn't even switch from play to scan. After applying plenty of 3-in-1 ND oil(I think Ron Rich has stock in that company), it's now scanning and playing and back to scanning like it should.....most of the time. I've noticed that when shifting from play to scan, the mech stutters a few times before it finally fully engages and takes off. It also seems to do it only when scanning from the higher selections to the lower: left to right as you face the mech itself. I suspect it's related to insufficient clutch lubrication, but I thought I'd double check with the group first.

That "stutter" indicates a sticky, and, or worn clutch --lack of, or improper type oil may have caused this, or, "someone messing with" the adjustments. Did you remove the clutch assembly and clean the clutch yoke pin? Did you READ the portion of my Seeburg Mechanism Guide, on this subject ? Also, thrust bearing adjustment, and worm gear spacer selection, can affect this--see the service manual-- Ron Rich

Oh, now you want me to READ the manual? I thought I only had to OWN it and the knowledge would automatically impart itself. I've just been using it to brush out the mouse turds.
