Wurlitzer 2710 - no motors running?

Q&A about all types of jukeboxes: Wurlitzer, Seeburg, Rock-Ola, AMI, and more.

Wurlitzer 2710 - no motors running?

by ginostef » Mon Feb 08, 2016 12:08 am

I got in a Wurly 2710 and I have the service manual but it is really hard to follow the circuit and the operation cycles.
Here are the symptoms,

The Select light is on, plugging in the juke causes the preset solenoid to pull in so I am assuming there is free play set here somehow, but the small switch behind the console is not there so not sure how it's done.

I can select a letter and number, the latch solenoid fires, the preset pulls back in, and then nothing happens. Meantime the resistors (5W and 10W get plenty hot so I have to limit on time.

The juke arrived in what seems as a stuck cycle - there is a record on the turntable, the extractor arm is fully extended, but neither the carriage motor or the turntable will run - nada.

All the fuses are good - not sure how to debug the selector as I haven't worked on one, but that fuse is okay also. Top tunes is installed. I bypassed it but still nogo.

Interesting side note - the load switch was cut off and the wires tied together back at the source, so I assume it is bad, but it's bypassed so I don't think that's it.

When the selection is made on the console, the pinbank does not trip anything - so no selection down there. Manually tripping a selection down there does nothing either.

I assume that I am staring at the solution but it is one of those days. The select switch for the motor is on - I dunno what's up here. I'm not a wurly guy but I'll get it sooner or later. Hoping someone out there can make it sooner!! Thanks

You say you "got in" this phonograph--for repair ?? Was it properly bolted for transport ? What was the the original complaint(s?).
You say fuses are good--checked by eye, or meter ??
I would look for missing voltage--very strange that the ("110vac") TT motor is not operating if any of the selector pins are released ??
Are either of the record lift arms "up" ??
All other motors are 24 volts AC or DC depending on the year of the phono--
I would assume that the keyboard is operating as it should --those resistors normally run real hot-

"ginostef" All of these symptoms have one thing in-common; the low voltage AC supply.

The selection system and all motors are 24VAC. the turntable motor is controlled 9along with the amplifier) from the Play relay in the amp and it too is 24VAC.

As Ron mentioned, the hot resistors on the keyboard should not be a problem. However they do complicate things a bit in that they too are from the low AC supply.

Look up the model number on the amp, then go here for a schematic (if you don't have one):

These are amp-only but all the power is supplied from here.

Yes, as I said, one of the extractor arms is up and a record is on the TT, but the TT is not turning. I will check voltages again, but not sure that can be an issue since the select light is on, and the preset and latch solenoids fire. It's a 2710 and I have the Service Manual for it.

Forgot to mention that I am in Manassas, VA - 20112. Sorry about that. When I say I got the box in - I mean it was transported locked down, over a few miles, as I usually do. This is an electrical problem where somewhere I am missing the obvious I think. The juke should not just stop (as I was given it) in the play mode, with a record loaded, lift arm up, and no motors running, and of course the cancel button does not work. The amp turns on and there is at least scratch noise when I clean the needle.
