Pathe Record Cabinet Information

My mom recently purchased a Pathe Record Cabinet. I only have a picture of it, I have not seen it myself, but I was wondering if anyone know how old it was and any other information about it. Thank you!

That's a nice Pathe' console model phonograph, probably from the late teens or early 1920s. From what I can tell, the front is paneled with walnut veneers. I'm not sure of the model, unfortunately.


Pathe' phonographs were designed to play Pathe' records. Unlike conventional 78s, in which the groove was modulated laterally (sideways), Pathe' records were cut with a groove that was modulated vertically (up and down). The records, themselves, were played with a special sapphire tipped stylus.

Seems there's more information available about the records than there is about the machines.

Thank you Joe for the information! Maybe I can search online for some old Pathe catalogs and find the model information from there. The cabinet is really a nice piece of craftsmanship, and in good condition. My mom says the record player works but I will have to let her know it only plays Pathe records!

p.s. Kind of a random question but useful if I'm going to start learning about old phonographs: How do you all pronounce "Pathé"? It seems that the French pronunciation is "pa-tay" but from a youtube video I head it pronounced "patty". I'm guessing most people say it the second way?

Going WAY back to my High School French class--I would pronounce it with a "soft T", and the empha-sis on the "e" spoken as if it were a "A" ( think that car company--Chebby) But--gotta be honest here--I flunked French-- Ron Rich

I've always heard it pronounced Path-A' (Path, as in walk down the "path"; "A" which rhymes with "they").
