Here we go again...Newbies coming up in the camp and don't even bother to read the wealth of knowledge that's already been presented here...want a quick fix and just Hit and Run, never to contribute to the Board again, and possibly destroy what they've acquired.
Sorry to be so damn cranky, but if you finally found your record player, take some time time to find out the history about it.
I only have one little 1966 brochure (my dad threw away all the dozens of Astro-Sonics brochures I had collected.). Astro-Sonics were the crosssover from Tube to Solid-State, so you definitely don't have a 50's unit. I think I had a 50's unit that my Aunt gave me, but didn't know how to deal with it, being a kid...it was loud as Hell, though. It had two front-mounted 12's or 15's and some cone deflectors. The right side opened up the radio and the turntable pulled out on a drawer.
If you want to find the age of your unit remove the back. On the amp/receiver you should find a small white sticker that should give the date of manufacture:
example:
R202-02-10
Chassis
09/65 (September, 1965), of course, different dates.

For the turntable
W620-01-01

If there is a separate amplifier bolted to the bottom, then like the chassis above:
Chassis
A-575-01-00
09/66 (whatever date)

If it's an early to late 60's you should have one of the turntables pictured below. I don't know how cleaning the back of the unit will fix things. That's like washing a car and thinking that it will start. You have no electronic background whatsoever, so let someone qualified handle it. The turntable, receiver/amp combination, or separate amp, optional tape deck all have
SEPARATE service manuals. You can have identical cabinets, but different components in each.
You could have (1) a dead cartridge, (2) broken wires, (3)electrolytic capacitors and resistors out of tolerance , scratchy controls with internal crud which causes one or both channels to not operate (unless you rotate them vigorously) and, who knows what else, needs replaced.
It's okay to look, but don't touch.
If the radio works but the phono doesn't sound, a process of elimination and testing is in order. Get some help. You don't want to damage such a "Magnificent" unit.
See if any of these pics compare to your Astro-Sonic components. --BB
P.S....I wouldn't mind finding some of those tube models, Regencys, Imperial/Concert Grands that the folks over on MagnavoxFriends talk about. What a treat that would be...I know those units kick some serious butt.
