Grundig Mystic Maestro

by stokester » Sun Feb 25, 2007 5:15 am

I've been reviewing my Grundig Majestic 8050 owner's manual and find reference to a "Mystic Maestro" speaker. Has anyone every used one of these or seen one for sale?

My searches have come up empty and it looks like a classic "HiFi" speaker for my Majestic.

Thanks,
Nick

Mystic Maestro

Hello,
I own a Grundig 5299. This radio came with a pair of speakers. On the back of each is the Mystic Maestro tag. These may be the speakers you are asking about. Each speaker has its own amplifier. There are 3 power tubes in each speaker. Each also can be plugged into a wall outlet for power.

Here are the two ways I use use these speakers. I'm sure they could be used with other Grundig systems.

1. Use them with a receiver that has its own amplifier. In this case you use a phone jack that plugs into the back of the speakers and connects to the 5299. In this usage the radio is providing the power for the speakers. This is how I use them with my 5299.

2. Use them with a radio that does not have an amp. In this case the radios are plugged into a wall for power. Then the wires connected to the speaker amp are connected to the receiver where a speaker is expected to connect. You then turn the speakers on via the on off switch on the end of each speaker. There are three knobs on the speakers that are used in this scenario. They are on-off /Bass/Treble/Loudness.

I had the speakers rebuilt and the 5299 completely restored. The speakers are very nice looking. They measure 21.5" L/11"W/10"H.

I assume these speakers were available on various models. The 5299 was available in 1961. It is a fine radio. It has 13 tubes in the radio and 6 tubes in the two speakers for a total of 19 tubes. Mine has the stereo decoder on back which produces a very nice sound.

And I thought powered speakers were new.

I've never seen another pair of Mystic Maestro speakers to know if all of them came with the amp. Neither can I remark about powered speakers being new. I do know this pair from 61 has their own power source. When the radio was being restored the person doing it was surprised by all the power. It was not until he was working on it did he realize that the amps in the speakers are not used when they are played using the 5299. Either way this radio sounds fantastic. I have numerous Grundigs from the 50's and none of them can touch the sound this 5299 produces. Now that could be nothing more than the stereo decoder.

Tubes

by MagnoliaDK » Wed Jul 11, 2007 10:08 pm

I do have a question for anyone out there about the Grundig 5299. I've checked the radio at radiomuseum.com and they list the tube count at 11. This radio has 13. The tube chart on the back panel list the following.

1 - EM87
3 - ECC83
1- ECH81
1 ECC85
1 - EF89
1 - EF80
1 EBC81
4 EL95

The tubes for the speakers are as follows

In each pair they have the following

1 -ECC83
2- 50L6GT

Obviously there are different model 5299's. Or radiomuseum is incorrect.

Does your 5299 have a suffix? I believe you have the US model. It has the 13 tubes. Radiomuseum 5299 is euro or perhaps an early design. I also think the difference is the US set has push-pull output for each channel. Without a schematic for the euro set I can't be sure but it does account for the 2-tube difference. Which makes me wonder. Have you played your radio thru speakers other than the Majestic ones. These sound to me to be a three tube phono amplifier, tubes ECC83/12AX7 and 50L6 output tubes, common schematic. Do you have a model number on them? It's interesting.

Hi,
Thanks for the information. I knew it was the US model but did not say that in my previous posts. I'll accept your opinion that that accounts for the two extra tubes. No I have not played the radio with other speakers. The speaker jack connectors are not very standard.

I've reviewed the back panel of the radio and the inside of the speakers. here is what is printed.

On the radio it says:

Model 5299 U/S Stereo

If there is anything printed past the word stereo I cannot see it. The stereo decoder starts in the middle of the word Stereo. so there could be something else printed, but I do not think there is anything else.

On the speakers there is no printing on the back panel other than the removeable label that says Mystic Maestro and the stamp that says Made in W. Germany. On the inside there is a diagram of the amp and on the bottom it says the following:

Grundig Majestic "Stereo Mate" 1

Then on the bottom line of the diagram:

GNrd 524 _____________________________________ 1711 58 He
