Seeburg R restoration

by carl_694 » Tue May 13, 2014 2:30 pm

Hey all,
Was tearing apart my Seeburg R today to start the cosmetic restoration and came across a chalk marking (as photographed). Anyone seen something like this before? Is it from someone who shopped the machine long ago or a QA mark? In any event, it was sorta neat to find hidden amidst all the grunge inside the machine. ICK.

Hi Carl,
I have seen "piles of wood", at the factory, with chalk markings on them--If I recall correctly they usually had a model number/part number on them--this was long after the R was built-- Ron Rich

Seems to be after the wood was stained however. Could be just about anything. Could be someone who assembled it and it is some sort of assembly mark/coding, or my other thought (like watch repair), watchmakers typically would etch their initials and date on inside of caseback of a watch when it was serviced.

That's what I'm guessing .got to assume someone has cleaned the box since 54. I know the guy who rebuilt my amp put a sticker with his name and date. This is on a piece toward the rear corner of the top. Hidden without a teardown.

Does anyone know what the speaker frames, coin door and speaker mesh are made of? Looking to repaint. Best guess is that the speaker frame us aluminum but the rest are pot metal or steel?

Hi Carl,
Not quite sure what you're "axkin'"--
Don't recall a "speaker mesh" on a R--Factory used "grill cloth" ( and there is some question if it was gold, or silver)--
What are you calling a "speaker frame" ?
Cashbox door was "pot metal casting"--door frame, was steel--

Thanks Ron:
Was talking about the round speaker covers on the sides. I think the circular frames are aluminum but not sure. It's my understanding I need to use a special primer for aluminum.

Just a quick update. The box is coming back together! Repainted inside and out (saving orig. stickers, etc.) and installed a laminate kit for the side white and burl sections. Will be a few more weeks while I wait for the boomerangs and crossbar to be rechromed. All I could afford, and really all that was necessary.
