Help with Rockola 1000

Hello, I am new here.
I recently purchased my first Juke Box, a Rock-ola 1000 / nostalgia model.

I am waiting on my manual, from victory glass to arrive.
I found a 490 manual on-line that was helpful.

The juke powers on. The three voltage lights on the power unit are lit.
The visible slow-blow fuse looks good.

The grabber arm is stuck in a down position and can be moved maybe 1/2 of an inch up.


The gearing on the grabber looks like it is in an odd position.


I see cut wire here


The electronic part seems ok. It cycles through the various modes and settings (free play, add credit)
The turntable will start when pressed down and the sound is audible.

The scan mode does not move the carousel.

I was considering disengaging the motors from the grabber arm and seeing if I can get the arm assembly to move manually.

Any help would be appreciated.

The very first thing I suggest that you do, is remove the CCC, open it up, split the two boards apart, and remove the battery (which hopefully, has done no damage). If there is no damage, I usually add wires long enough to mount the battery outside of the CCC. While there, clean the edge connectors with a pencil eraser--only !
Second, use penetrating oil on the gripper assembly (NOT WD-40 !). I prefer the non "spray" type. Direct this to ALL joints, and especially in the area of the two side by side gears. Oil all other areas of the gripper with SAE 20 wt. ND oil. Remove the gripper motor and work the oil in with your hand, by turning the drive gear--this WILL take some time. Once you can turn the gears with your hand, use the 20 wt. in the spots the "penetrating" oil was used. Once you can move the gripper, stop it dead center ( with the bow up). Push the center portion (that grabs the records) down and oil it all the way "around" Pull the bow up gently and oil the sliding portion of the bow. Place the gripper arm over the record basket, and re-install the motor--leave a small amount of "gear lash".
Third--the turntable--You say you "push down" on it to make it work ? You will need to lift it off and investigate what's happening there--I suspect the idler wheel is not seated properly inside the turntable--Do NOT stretch/cut the spring ! Might as well oil it while you are there --same oil--

I definitely want the battery outside of the board.

I pulled the cover on the power assembly and located 5 fuses. The F3 1 amp 250v slo-blo was blown.
Replaced it with a fast acting fuse (radio shack was out of the slo). I am using the fast acting fuse as a test and will replace it with the slow acting fuse this week.

I powered it on and the fuse blew again.

I'm not sure if this fuse controls the mechanical part of the juke.
If it does, I figure the gear's locked and the fuse blew to protect the assembly.

I am going to take some pictures to make sure I correctly understand the components, that you mentioned.

I removed the grabber motor.

I removed the two 3/8 bolts (parallel to the carousel) from underneath the unit. I also removed the 1/4 screw that holds the pot to the bottom of the motor, for maneuverability (this was probably not needed). I unplugged the electrical connector and lifted the unit out from the top.
Here is the motor (label reads: Volts 28 D Part number 5249)


I was able to rotate the bow off of the platter and up to the carousel. I was only able to do this by turning the cam gear in unison with the grabber arm and there was a good amount of resistance. (I think it is possible to over-rotate this assembly, which I accidentally did)

Questions:
1. If I put in a new fuse and put the selector on scan (with motor out and the bow over the carousel), would the carousel spin?
2. If this was a car motor (window, etc), I would put positive and negative power to the leads, then reverse the jumpers to make sure it moves in both directions. Can / Should something similar be done to check this motor while it is out?
3. What does the cog that sticks out of the bottom of the motor do?

1. Yes--if the gripper bow is down in the correct position above the basket, putting the service switch in "scan" should turn on the basket motor.
2. If there are only two leads to the motor, yes--if there are four, no--
3. "cog" ? --do you mean the "adjustment screw", that has the red glue on it to tell you not to "adjust", or "remove it" ? ---- If so, that was the (motor) factory's "thrust adjustment" screw--

Thanks for the help. I was referring to the shaft opposite the red pain nut.
The basket did not rotate on scan mode.
I pulled the basket motor by removing 3 3/8 nuts.
The basket motor has no part number, but looks identical to the grabber motor (exception of attachments)


I plugged the basket motor back in (still disengaged from the basket), put it on scan and nothing happened.
I plugged the grabber motor into the basket motor clip and that did not engage, on scan, either.

I think I need to bench test both motors. Any ideas on how I should do this?

I would also like to test the basket connection for power.
I should be able to put in in scan and check for voltage with a multi-meter, correct?

The basket rotates, but not a full 360 degrees. Does the basket only rotate a set number of degrees?

Are you talking about the "knurled" shaft at the rear of the motor ? If so, it's there to turn the motor manually.
Basket only should "go" one way--side switch cam will prevent it from going in the 2nd direction, if "pushed", and you may cause problems there--
Motors are usually NOT identical. One (the gripper) usually has an oil hole drilled in it where the casting "flanges". They are both 28VDC

Figured out why the carousel would not make a full rotation. A record was raised up enough to hit the bow.
Probably should have removed all records at step one. This would have lightened the load on the carousel motor.
It also would make it easier to heat or oil the gears.

Next I will check for voltage at the carousel motor connection while the unit is on scan.

Checked the voltage at the connection for both carousel and grabber motor.
Grabber had power at on scan, carousel did not.
I plugged both motors into the grabber connection. Both spun. The grabber motor would alternate speeds (fast fast slow fast fast slow).
Can this be correct?
Next I am going to take some pictures and figure out where I should oil.

Are these the points where I should apply penetrating oil and then the 20 weight?

I am going to pick up some penetrating oil and 20 weight today.
Locally, I can get sea foam deep creep, PB blaster, liquid wrench and marvel mystery oil.

For the 20 weight non detergent, does compressor oil work for this. I assume I shouldn't use 3 in 1 oil.

Came back from walmart, autozone , advance auto and ace. Could not find a 20 weight ND oil. They had 20 weight synthetics for motorcycle and 4 stroke engines.
Walmart had a 30 weight ND oil.
I picked up some zoom-spout and marvel mystery air tool oil (which I need for other stuff).
I also grabbed some sea foam deep creep penetrating oil.
Can I use any of this stuff?
