I doubt whoever you spoke with even knew what a record player is.
Most likely some college kid that is into Ipods.

Fact is, Magnavox console stereos were first introduced to the public around 1958, with the optional stereo multiplex adapters after 1960 when stereo FM was first introduced. (invented by Zenith)

So that said, your console couldn't possibly have been made in 1948.

It's listed in the 1961 Magnavox product catalog available online if you do a search.

Note that today's Magnavox is "Magnavox" in name only. It has been reduced to a trademark, bought by Funai (along with Philco and Sylvania). They don't have any of the historic info of the former corporation.

To end the confusion here, here is an advertizment from the 1961 Magnavox products catalog.
The model discussed here, 1ST657S, shows it's clearly nothing from the 1940's.

The Internet is a marvelous thing, however it's not a good substitute for actually being there.

I have a 1ST663S dated last I checked 1963. Magnavox first introduced stereo FM in 1958. There was no FM stereo in 1949. Hope that helps. I actually have the same stereo adapter, permanently installed by the time my model was manufactured. Anybody have calibration procedures for the multiplex adapter? I can work it out, but if someone has that part of the service manual, I'd love to have a bit of the text.

This is an OLD post concerning a stereo that the poster tried to sell (or has already sold) last year.

The cabinet is DEFINITELY from the early 1960s. That style of furniture did not exist in 1949, let alone stereophonic home reproduction, as has been noted.

I'm keeping this up, for reference purposes, but will lock the thread.
