Help identify this console....with matching speaker. Please

by magnavox man » Wed Jul 30, 2008 6:34 am

I have come across an older magnavox console that was originally a mono unit, but was converted to a stereo unit with a separate matching speaker box. It is in somewhat working condition. There is a tag inside that says it was converted to a stereo by a magnavox authorized dealer. The wood is in rough condition, but the components seem strong. I found some numbers on the unit, but can't find any information about it. The numbers are: JC17 8, 6930c3 3, Serial # 3230894, Style# c307-35. Of the information I have been able to find I think the additional speaker is called a Magnasonic, but I'm not 100% sure. I'd love a little help determining an age, or point me in the right direction on where to find some info. How much is too much to spend on a piece like this?

I have 4 Magnavox consoles in varying ages, and have never had much luck finding a date on them, or a model name, etc.

I have one of those, and parts of another one.

This was the Magnavox answer to stereo in the early 1960s. They sold the basic unit as an upgradeable mono player, but it had a stereo amp and pickup. When you wanted to change to stereo, you bought the second speaker, and the dealer hooked it up and moved a jumper on the amp. They put the balance control on the amp chassis, expecting it to be adjusted only once by the dealer.

Aside from the modifications I made, does the record changer look like the one below? It came out of the other unit. I got everything from that one but the cabinet, which the original owner turned into a liquor cabinet. My intact unit is unmodified.

Here is a photo of the modified one (the turntable I use daily):
