unknown Decca gramophone

by redlag » Tue Jul 15, 2008 1:10 pm

Hi,
I have a decca gramophone and I am trying hard to find information about it on net, but in vain. All I could find is that another similar Decca is on sale and without any information.. I am attaching the image that they have used as I dont have one at the moment. Could someone tell me its model number and its year of manufacture.
Thanks in advance..

I'm not sure of the model number. Have you checked under the turntable for a mfg's plate?

I do know that this style was introduced in the late 1920s--circa 1927-1929. This contained a long wrap-around type horn in place of the conventional inverted bowl-shaped horn that had been used since 1914. The purpose of the longer tone chamber was to expand the gramophone's tonal range--fuller mid-range and bass, which allowed it to play electrically recorded records (introduced in 1925) with greater fidelity than the older models.

The patent information appears on this page:

I'm not familiar with this model myself, but it seems to be an improved version of the Decca senior. Decca's of this period should have a paper label under the turntable, which should include the actual date of manufacture.

Thanks for your help, guys. The label on the gramopnone contains a serial number and "patent pending number" which I reckon will not be of any help to identify the machine.
Anyways thanks a ton again.

That serial number could hold the key to the date of the machine.
6 figure numbers traditionally give the date on a Decca ie 040726 is 4th July 1926.

The paper labels appeared on earlier models with numbers as above - I'm not sure about the later models but this is either a Decca 33 or a 66. It will say so on the machine.
I used to be looking for things but now I've found them I don't look at them!
