Seeburg r selection unit

by Lostlumberjacks » Tue Jul 30, 2013 11:59 pm

Hi guys, I'm new to this forum, and to jukebox repair. I have repaired pinball machines for about 15 years but we wanted to have a older style jukebox. I've had newer boxes like the rowes from the 70's and we do have a cd rockola fireball. I bought this seeburg r and a rockola princess in a package deal. I'm trying to fix up the r because everybody in the family like the looks of it. It does have a good sound too. Not sure what I'm doing about the princess yet.

Enough about me, I've got this seeburg r that it wants to continually play the same record over and over. The only way I can get it to stop playing is to trigger the record over micro and then switch it into service and it will start scrolling, then I put switch back in regular play And it will go right back to the same 2 selections every time, even if turned off, and or unplugged overnight. I'm trying to slowly figure this box out, without pulling out my hair out. Somebody at one time had unsoldered the "clamp arm switch" but I don't think that is effecting my problem. It seemed to work better yesterday when the middle selections were made, but now today im stuck with A1 and K9 it just keeps wanting to play them again and again.

I'm trying to figure out what tells the selection unit to stop at certain spots. I'm used to tinkering with stuff, but I'm slow going as everything on this is new to me and its a lot to take in. Any help is appreciated. I would like to get a copy of mr Rich's book on the selection unit. I do have the operation manual and the service and parts manual. Thanks again. Todd Scott

Hi Lost---,
Welcome !
Question for you--did you ( or someone) transport this jukebox on it's back, without having the proper bolts inserted, or was it "bounced" around without the bolts ??
As for my Mechanism Guide, PM me for details---Also, thank-you for refering to me as "Mr Rich", however, by doing so, you just remind me of my old age---please use "Ron"--

No not on back. I loaded it in my trailer. Wheeled it and the princess right in. I've got a nice covered trailer. And strapped tight. The only thing I did was tighten the nuts down tight below the mech. It was sold to me as "scanning twice and won't pick up" he said he had a guy go all through the selection unit and test it in his R and they said when they put it in, it worked good. Sat for 4 years then all it would do is scan. He was moving and I bought the 2 boxes.

I'm gonna try to send you an pm. I want the book, and want to get this thing going. It's really cool. Pretty good shape cosmetically too. It will need a cap kit but that's not to big of a deal. Thanks for help.

Hi Paul,
PM worked ! I answered it---
Looks as if the guy that sold you that R, knew as little as you about it--it's to old a unit to have the "typical, scans twice" Seeburg problem !
Do you have the "I & O Manual", and the Service/parts Manuals for it ? If not, check above in the jukebox section "--where to find----" and order them.
Once you have read them, open the rear "hatch", and look at the "U" shaped bracket that cradles the contact block (aka"frog"). I would bet that the frog has jumped out of it's holder--hopefully with out major damage to any thing-- Ron Rich

Ok. Thanks to mr Rich I found the problem but not sure how to fix it. It's like he said it is in that unit and what's happening is that it seems to be misaligned and the coil that pushes the tab back in is missing it. And on the b sides its too close and sometimes bumping them back on accident (a problem we had yesterday) canceling tracks.

Ok guys, I appreciate all the help. I've fiddled with it and fussed with it. And it works except "A1" which the coil will miss hitting the tab on right side half the time. I move it any further left then all of the other side coil will miss the tabs on left. I've tried playing with coils and shimming it out at an angle with no luck. There is no coil left or right adjustment. It still misses a1 most of the time. Anybody have this trouble before. Maybe new coil? Or a new spring shaft? It works pretty good otherwise, it drives me nuts when it's not 100% thanks again Todd

Paul,
Is the frogtracking freely ? If so, is the spring steel in the u shaped bracket holding the frong tightly against the "other side" ? Ron Rich

Mr. Rich you must be getting old you keep calling me Paul, lol. The frog Is moving freely in the slot. I took the hole thing (mech) out, put it back in and now it's bumping the opposite selections back in while tracking up the track, (like they were never selected).only on Side closest to the front. Thus it cancels the selections on the one side. Are these selection units this finicky. I'm pulling out my hair at this point. I really do apreciate the help mr rich. You are a dedicated man! Todd,
Sorry 'bout "Paul"--thought I dunt seen that somewhere ?? --and yes, Iz old !!
Sure sounds to me like the frog is binding, and/or that spring is unable to hold it in the proper position. I would remove the SA unit, check very carefully for any sign of friction within the "slides", and also on the frog itself. I have seen limited occasions, where it was necessary to file both. I suggest that the slides, and frog be cleaned of ALL old "lubrication" and a very thin coat of CRC StayLube Moly-graph High temp grease, be applied. Then CAUTIOUSLY "bend" the spring inward--It will "snap-off" if you go too far (don't axk!!) !!! Ron Rich
