GE CONSOLE STEREO

by Bobby Basham » Wed Feb 27, 2013 3:01 am

Hey Folks...

I have a local person here in Tucson that handled his mom's estate sale several months back. It was a great sale and just about everything sold except the stereo. It's in beautiful condition and, as far as I can recollect, everything works. I don't know how much advertising he did for the estate sale, but you'd think he would have gotten some nibbles here and surrounding areas.

Out of the blue, he emailed me and wants to GIVE this thing to me, because he's afraid it may go to someone that would probably gut it or abuse it in some way, and he definitely doesn't want to put it in storage. All that he asks for in return is that I transfer some of his tape reels to CD or another digital format. He said the reels were used to send "audio letters" to friends and relatives.

I have a similar GE (minus tape deck) stacked out in the garage (very dry) that I'm giving to a coworker, but I don't know where I'm gonna put this new one. It's roughly 69"L x 17"D x 25"H, and I've got so much furniture and consoles that you can't see any baseboards in any room...LOL! I so like the fact that it does play reels, so it may be a keeper and may have to part with a (big gulp...) Maggie!!!

Here are the pics he sent me. I'm not complaining or bragging, but sometimes feel like I could potentially become a hoarder, like those folks with 100+ cats in their house, and cannot afford to feed them all.

I'm honored at the fact that he even considered me, when he left a message on my phone originally asking about a reasonable sale price and I spoke with him a few times and thought no more of it.

Oh well, time to step back and see what actually needs to stay or go. What an addiction, I can't save them all. Pray for me, and thanks for reading my essay. --BB

Oh my, Bobby... Does it sound as good as it looks? Definitely a keeper. The good thing is that unlike cats, there is no sand box to clean regulary. :D
Vinyl is disease which attacks that area of the brain desiring digital recordings. Once you catch it, you are cured.

Thom, I have no clue to how it sounds. I've never met the guy. For some reason, he singled me out on this board months ago, possibly sent a private email, then looked up every Robert Basham in town (about 4 of us), and left a message on my home phone.

We're gonna arrange a weekend pickup in the near future, but right now, I need to hire a "space utilization committee" to rearrange all the stuff that I have now...LOL

It's just a wakeup call for all the stuff I have but will never use. I could probably make a killing on Craigs List, but most of them are my "back burner projects", that work, but not 100% operable and need some TLC. That would be perfect for someone willing to put time into repairing them. That was supposed to be my hobby repairing these less-than-perfect units, but there are just too many things here for me to tackle.

Anyhoo, when I acquire this beast, I will let you know. It may look cosmetically good and clean, but you never know what issues it may have, due to its age.

He just wants to unload this last piece so he can put his mom's house on the market. --BB

Bobby, lucky you, that is one of the good Ge's with the cabinet made by William Tell. They made that cabinet for several years and
from the looks of the tuner face, this one looks to be the last version, 1970 i believe. The later versions used a smaller woofer but
in a sealed air suspension box, I think Ge called it Acoustaphonic Chamber, these were much more accurate sounding than the earlier
version with the larger woofer but in an open backed cabinet.
You should let go of another to keep this one.
