'61 Seeburg AY160- turntable carriage won't move

by His Boy Elroy » Mon Jun 01, 2009 6:36 pm

I just acquired a '61 Seeburg AY160 "Select-O-Matic" jukebox. When I power it up, it lights up and the turntable starts spinning, but the turntable carriage won't move. I tried the record reject button and tried selecting a song, but the carriage just sits there with the turntable spinning.

This is the first juke I will attempt to repair myself, I'm really not sure where to start though. Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

Elroy,
I would suggest that before you do anything more, that you first determine which "AY-160" you have, by looking at the ID tag on the rear, outside of the cabinet. Then purchase the correct (Seeburg) "Information & Operation Guide", Service Manual, Trouble Shooting Guide, and IMHO, a copy of my "Seeburg Mechanism Guide". All of the above are available from http://www.alwaysjukin.com and other sources (including myself, for my book only). Then, using the I&O Guide, determine that in fact you have the correct parts installed that model machine. There were many "versions" of an AY, and it can make a difference if someone has installed "alternate" parts. In the case of the problem you have spotted, that should make no difference. Note, I suggest that you NOT purchase any books from eBay, as the ones that I have seen are poor copies.
Your problem could be just a lack of (the correct) oil, or it could be something very simple. It is, however somewhat impossible to describe the procedure that you need to follow, if you don't have a reference with at least the part names. Ron Rich

Thanks Ron,

I'll have to get the manuals...

The tag says "AY 160 SH2". So I guess that's what I'll be looking for.

Regarding the parts, the previous owner said that it worked "a long time ago" before it was stored... Hopefully that's an indicator that it has the correct parts but who knows...

I'm a pinball guy but occasionally I come across Jukes when I'm buying pins, this will be the first one I try to bring back to life myself... I had a Seeburg 201 that had a similar looking "Selecto O Matic" mech, I wish I had scanned that manual. I sold the manual & documentation with the unit. But, I suppose this mech could be a little different...

I appreciate the reply
